What is Celiac Disease?

One of my daughters has Celiac Disease which is an autoimmune disorder. It is not contagious, but can be very serious to those who have it. When she eats foods that contain or have come in contact with Gluten (wheat, oat, barley, or rye), her body starts to attack the celia that line her intestines. Her intestines become damaged and she is unable to properly digest food or absorb nutrients from the food.

As long as she does not eat Gluten, her body is perfectly healthy and there are no restrictions on her activities. After eating Gluten, her body is able to heal in a few days, as long as no more Gluten is ingested.

The symptoms of Celiac disease can be widely varied and each individual finds their body reacts in different ways. My daughter’s symptoms can include tummy ache, vomiting, head ache, clouded thinking, depression, and irritability.

We've had a gluten free house since the fall of 2001 and while there's always more to learn, I feel pretty comfortable with the process. I'm happy to help families who are struggling or who are just starting out. Let me know what you need and we'll manage together.
